The double-headed eagle is the most recognizable Orthodox Christian symbol after the cross itself. It served as the Byzantine Empire's official emblem. This iconic symbol represents the fundamental unity between the Orthodox Church and the state. It embodies a governance philosophy in which the Church and the state operate harmoniously.
This unified approach reflects the belief that a moral society is best governed by the principles of the Church, creating a truly Christian and theocratic society. While it acknowledges that all men are fallible and can fall into corruption, its proponents argue, without the guidance of the immutable truth of Christ and His Church, it is much easier for a society to degenerate as is evidenced today. It is a modern innovation to have a secularized society, devoid of this union between the government and the Church.
Our IRREGULARS adaptation of the double headed eagle, reimagines what an ideal society could look like here in America.
We’ve used our national symbol of the bald eagle, with a banner reading, “IN GOD WE TRUST”, with the understanding that this is the true Triune God.
- The heads of the eagles both share a crown adorned with the cross, representing the unity of Church and state sharing in the responsibility of governance.
- The talon on the left is holding a globe or an orb, which represents civil governance responsibilities.
- The talon on the right wields a sword, representing the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesians 6:17).
- Finally the breast of the eagle is protected by a shield with an icon of the cross. “Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked” (Ephesians 6:16).
We acknowledge the idealistic nature of transforming America into a holy nation. Our design suggests that such change begins with individual acceptance of Orthodox Christian truth, achieved through suffering and repentance. The Byzantine Empire's longevity is evidence of possible success through Christian unity between Church, state, and the people. A nation divided is a nation easily conquered, warning that division leaves a nation vulnerable to both external and internal threats.
Glory to God for all things and may He have mercy on us all.
